Dubai set to go green

25 October 2007
DUBAI — All new buildings to be constructed in Dubai emirate will have to comply with green building standards from January next year.
The decision comes following directives by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
The decision reflects Dubai’s commitment to address environmental challenges such as climate change and global warming.
Mohammed Al Gergawi, UAE Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs and Chairman of the Executive Office in Dubai, said: “Shaikh Mohammed’s decision to introduce innovative strategies underscores Dubai’s support for international efforts to address global environmental challenges. This decision will make Dubai as the first city in the Middle East and among few cities in the world to adopt the green building strategy.”
Ahmad bin Byat, Secretary-General of the Dubai Executive Council, said the Council will immediately adopt necessary measures to ensure effective implementation of the decision. He highlighted the phenomenal financial advantages of going green — from lower construction costs and operating overheads to reduced utility bills for Dubai residents.
Meanwhile, the first ever green building in the region that has minimal impact on the environment through energy and water conservation opened in Jebel Ali Industrial area yesterday. The green building that houses the headquarters of Pacific Control System, a total solutions provider with operations around the world, has the features for waste minimisation and recycling and no green house gas emissions. The building was inaugurated by Mohammed Al Gergawi, at a function attended by Sandy Wiggins, Chairman of US Green Building Council (USGBC).

The implications are all the more profound for upcoming real estate hubs in the UAE such as Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah.

• Reduction in operating costs
• Less usage of water and energy resources
• Improved air quality
• Increased productivity
