DUBAI — The snow of England to the sand dunes of Dubai is a vast change for Lindsay Amro and her family celebrating Christmas this year.

Although many families may be a long way from home, malls and hotels have spared no effort in celebrating the season even if it is against the backdrop of the desert.

An enormous 40-foot Christmas tree, glittering in fairy lights, stretches to the roof at Wafi City Mall while around Dubai, hotels are wrapped in tinsel, decorated for the festive season as Dubai’s large expatriate community settles in to celebrate the family time.

Lindsay came to Dubai 16 years ago. After meeting and marrying an Emirati, she is this year celebrating Christmas with her 18-month-old twin girls, four-year-old and seven-year-old boys.

“Since my oldest son’s first Christmas, I’ve missed Christmas at home and I wanted to go home,” she said.

“But I don’t think it would make a difference as long as we’re together.”

Lindsay said the festive spirit was still strong because of the efforts all the malls and hotels had made.

“There are fantastic services for Christmas in Dubai and the hotels and malls really cater to the young children with brunches and bouncy castles and Santa of course.”

Her family was Muslim and recognised the religious spirit of Eid but also the special family time surrounding Christmas.

“In the world today they can celebrate so many different cultures and religions,” she said.

“Children are children and they have no bias and to celebrate both is fantastic.”

The only thing she misses is the snow but there is certainly enough look-alike snow going around the malls and hotels, not to mention the closest thing to a white Christmas with Santa at Ski-Dubai, Mall of The Emirates.

Wafi mall staff have been planning decorations and festivities for the centre since February and a team of five staff from UK company Seasonal Displays travelled to the mall and spent one week setting up the display.

From November 29, it has become a spectacular display of snowflakes, lights, and tinsel.

The theme of the winter wonderland of Narnia has transformed the mall with the Ice Castle — the home of the evil Queen of Narnia — and animated displays including Mr and Mrs Beaver and other characters from the story “The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe”.

Delighted children enter through the enchanted wardrobe to see Santa, all the way from the Santa Claus Village in Finland, at the Secret Grotto or they can dare to meet the Ice Queen inside her castle.

The decorations will stand until January 6 while carols, music, festive food and shopping promotions abound at malls and hotels across the region.

Meanwhile, some of the popular Christmas gifts are proving to be technology related with Elie El Massih, Marketing Manager of Virgin Megastore, rating the iPod and the Playstation 3 as some of the most sought after presents.

Sheraton Dubai Creek Hotel Communications officer Caroline Ismail said the hotel had a long-standing tradition of dressing up the hotel and organising festive events for Dubai’s community — even the hotel’s staff spend a month auditioning and practising to sing carols in the lobby.

“There are loyal guests who have been visiting for 25 years,” Ismail said.

The restaurants are already about three quarters booked for Christmas Eve and Christmas day celebrations.

Dubai gives property ownership rights to foreigners...

DUBAI 15/03/2006— The Dubai government on Tuesday issued a long awaited property law which partly legalises foreign ownership of properties in the emirate. The booming Gulf city state of Dubai has passed a law to legitimise property ownership by foreigners, who previously bought indirectly through contracts with developers, newspaper reports said yesterday.
“Foreigners can become freehold property owners in areas designated by the ruler,” said script of the law, the statment printed in natioanl newspapers.

“They can also derive benefit from their property or rent it out for a period not exceeding 99 years.”

Foreigners make up more than 80% of Dubai’s estimated 1.2 million population.
Until now, property ownership has been limited to residents of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and other nationals of the Arab Gulf Cooperation Council, which also includes Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Previously, foreigners who bought property in Dubai’s bustling real estate market, such as British football star David Beckham, received a deed from the major developing companies.
These are effectively owned and controlled by Dubai’s government and its ruler, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, and his family.

The law comes nearly four years after the government first announced freehold ownership to expatriates, grouped under three Dubai-government owned entities Emaar Properties, Nakheel and Dubai Properties, the local daily Gulf News reports.

DUBAI — All new buildings to be constructed in Dubai emirate will have to comply with green building standards from January next year.

The decision comes following directives by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
The decision reflects Dubai’s commitment to address environmental challenges such as climate change and global warming.

Mohammed Al Gergawi, UAE Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs and Chairman of the Executive Office in Dubai, said: “Shaikh Mohammed’s decision to introduce innovative strategies underscores Dubai’s support for international efforts to address global environmental challenges. This decision will make Dubai as the first city in the Middle East and among few cities in the world to adopt the green building strategy.”

Ahmad bin Byat, Secretary-General of the Dubai Executive Council, said the Council will immediately adopt necessary measures to ensure effective implementation of the decision. He highlighted the phenomenal financial advantages of going green — from lower construction costs and operating overheads to reduced utility bills for Dubai residents.

Meanwhile, the first ever green building in the region that has minimal impact on the environment through energy and water conservation opened in Jebel Ali Industrial area yesterday.The green building that houses the headquarters of Pacific Control System, a total solutions provider with operations around the world, has the features for waste minimisation and recycling and no green house gas emissions. The building was inaugurated by Mohammed Al Gergawi, at a function attended by Sandy Wiggins, Chairman of US Green Building Council (USGBC).

Dubai World completes raising US$ 5b loan facility

Dubai World Corporation announced that it had completed yesterday its debut syndicated fundraising of US$ 5.0 billion in loans through a syndicate of three major European banks to fund part of its global acquisitions and investments, as well as for general corporate purposes. Due to overwhelming demand from the market, Dubai World Corporation is pleased to announce that it has elected to increase the total facility size to US$ 5 billion from an initial launch amount of US$ 2.7 Billion. The loan was sold to over 50 banks from 27 countries globally, with approximately 40 percent of demand coming from European banks, 30 percent from Asian banks and 21 percent from Gulf region financial institutions. Credit Suisse International, Deutsche Bank AG, London Branch, and The Royal Bank of Scotland plc were the Initial Mandated Lead Arrangers and Bookrunners of the Facility. Syndication of the Facility was launched on September 4 to a selected group of financial institutions. Management Presentations for the benefit of potential lenders, presenting an overview of Dubai World and its core operating subsidiaries and detailing the transaction, took place in London, Dubai, and Hong Kong.

Dubai is big and when I say that I mean B.I.G. In the 60 minute interview, Shiekh Maktoum was asked why he was in such a hurry to build Dubai. He responded that he wanted the best standard of living for his people and he wanted is now not in 20 years. The truth is that Dubai has been changing for the last 35 years and quite quickly too. People in Dubai love shopping... there are so many malls... and each and every one of them is bursting at the seams with people. Now that the Summer Surprises has started, entire Dubai will become one massive shopping mall. Dubai Summer Surprises is the way Dubai blackmails people into forgetting about the blistering heat with fabulous sales and different weekly themes for kids ranging from color surprises, knowledge surprises, heritage surprises to sweets surprises a whole gamut of stuff geared to entertaining kids, these activities happen mainly in malls. And of course there is Modhesh Fun City.

They build an entire city called Modhesh Fun City, 30,000 sq mts facility offering a world of entertainment, an indoor destination, they have an entire amusement park inside the Airport Expo. Divided into over 20 different zones, the Fun City caters to a wide spectrum of interests. Dubai unveils 11-billion dollar canal plan

DUBAI (AFP) — Cash-rich Dubai on Wednesday unveiled the latest in a series of grandiose projects, a 75-kilometre (46 mile) canal which will extend the business and leisure hub into the heart of the emirate's desert.

The 11-billion dollar Arabian Canal will flow inland from the city's port of Jebel Ali to loop the under-construction second airport before curving back towards the Gulf, Saeed Ahmed Saeed of developers Limitless said.

Along the way, public leisure facilities and mixed-use developments will sprout up along its banks, said Saeed, Limitless' chief executive.

"The project will create life in the desert," he said.

Dubai is already famous for such architectural extravagances as the Burj Dubai tower, the world's tallest.

Work on the canal project is to start in December, when machines will begin moving more than a million cubic metres of earth a day -- "enough to fill 400 Olympic-sized swimming pools" -- for a three-year construction period.

The channel will be 150 metres (yards) wide and six metres deep, enough to accommodate yachts up to 40 metres long, said the company, a subsidiary of the state-owned Dubai World.

The booming emirate has a creek which has traditionally hosted dozens of wharfs in the city, historically a trading centre. But the natural waterway has recently been extended into the desert becoming a feature of giant construction developments.

Plans to extend the creek to have an outlet on the Gulf were also approved earlier this year.
